Le Coeur en braille (Heartstrings)

During the past winter holidays, I watched couple heartwarming foreign movies which I would like to introduce you to.

The movie I bet your whole family will enjoy is a French movie "Le Coeur en braille" (Heartstrings), based on the novel with the same title. The movie was released in France on December 28, 2016. Here is the movie trailer. I couldn't find a clip with English subtitle, so you'll need to exercise your French here. :)

The story is about a talented cellist and top student, 12 years old Marie, who has a degenerative eye disease. In the middle of the school year, her parents are arguing whether or not board her at an institute for the blind, but Marie has plan to audition for a prestigious music school.

Victor is a friendly and dynamic boy in Marie's class. He is bad at every school work. He always gets the lowest mark. Marie offers to tutor Victor as a way to conceal the fact her vision is declining fast. They begin to know each other, and Victor discovers that he likes Marie! When Marie reveals her eye disease and the little prank, Victor is furious. But their strong friendship remains, and Victor helps Marie to hide her eye condition so that she can finish her school year and go to music school entrance examination.

How to support our children and love them is always a tough subject. In the story, Marie's parents are separating. Her mother is 100% supportive for Marie's music talent and dream. On the other hand, Marie's father sees Marie as a disabled individual who must admit to an Institute immediately. Her dad seems to be a bad father, but he is concerned with his own child's health and safety.

Single-parent family has difficulties too. For instance, Victor's mom died when he was five. His dad always tells Victor his mother just left and still keeps his mother's clothes, but Victor knew the truth. He takes a brave step to open up a conversation with his father on this matter. On a lighter note, Victor's dad tries to dodge the question "how do you know mom loves you." I asked my parents this question several times when I was a little kid! What was your answer when your children asked?

The girl who played Marie is Alix Vaillot. She is not a professional actress. In reality, she is violin major student and goes to a music academy school. At the time the movie was filmed, Vaillot has study violin for quite some years and plays very well. Here is a video of her violin performance. Vaillot undertook 9 months of intensive cello practice in order to sound good in the movie. I think her hard work paid off.

I like this movie Le Coeur en braille. It shows family love, friendship, and children overcomes doubt and discouragement. I hope you'll like it.
